The
Creation of an Artist
Who is she
that paints her rhythm in your mind,
draws her soul through your eyes,
and only if once, whispers a spiritual apprise.

I
was born and raised on the both sides of the
Rocky Mountains in Canada, so you would think with such beauty surrounding that artistic
expression would have seized me as a child and carried me forward in a torrent of creative
waves...well, it didn't. My only interest up until I was 15 or so was horses, horses and
horses. I still love horses, I just draw them more now instead of ride them.
At 15 years of age I met a very well known Canadian artist,
Bob Masse
A few of my favorite pictures of Bob's
I was in awe of this man's ability....and thus
began my interest and kind of the beginning of my artistic pursuits....but first I
had to adventure out into the world of teens and examine the area in depth before I would
begin full immersion into the world of art.
Being a teenager is a complicated experience in itself.......
After a wild journey in the "Born to be Wild" years I decided I was all grown up
and at the age of 20 I was married, had my first baby, and made my first picture. It was a
miracle! I was amazed - my friends and family however gave me that kind of crooked smile
and patted me sympathetically on the back, muttering things like....oh, that's very....
nice dear....what is it? I didn't pay it much mind, they were not wrong in their observations.
I had a long ways to go, but I did know where I wanted to go and figured if I just kept
going I would eventually get there. Not all roads we walk upon are easy to travel, but they
are roads and as long as we know the destination it seems logical that if one keeps going
he will arrive, at some point in time.
Bob probably has no idea that he opened that artistic door and turned the lights on for me.
He was simply being and doing what Bob does, but something in his art or him, I don't know
which, suddenly opened a whole new other world to me.
Then came the work......sigh
Many many, many hours of patient practice and undying perseverance. With no formal
training, I was truly on my own. I have had people exclaim to me, "Oh, it so wonderful
to be born with such a talent...." and I have to laugh. Some people are born with
a natural ability to draw and paint, but I was not one of them. This talent wasn't born into
me, it was born from me. All those years of practice, long hours and intention. That was
really my talent - persistence.
All in all, I had my target set and that target was to create works of art that equaled or
surpassed Bob Masse. That was my technical target. It wasn't that I wanted to be better
than him, or be like him... it was simply my destination. I have since discovered that the
road never really ends - there are always more roads connected to it and thus I am always
heading for some new destination.
My artistic or creative targets have still not been met, and in all honesty as long as I am
alive, I am certain there will always be new roads to travel.
My Viewpoint on Art
The question, "What is Art?", has come up more than once for me
and my standard answer has
always been.... "Well, art is a communication."
Something along those lines.
Which it is.....but that is only a part of it.
If I had to sum it all up into one word, that word would be, Freedom.
Art is simply Freedom
